What’s in our Collections? An Army Hat

In our collections we have a World War II age army dress hat that was worn by Wendell Fix. It was generously donated to the museum by John F. Fix.

This is a US Army enlisted man’s olive-drab wool service cap. This style of dress appeared as early as the 1930’s.  Serge wool was a smooth-faced material used for the enlisted man’s service coat and cap rom 1926 through the WWII period. The material replaced the napped wool used during the WWI era. The wool cap was considered part of the winter uniform to be worn while on duty at posts, camps, and stations and when on leave. The bell crown style was introduced in 1902 and used throughout the WWII era.
